Why I Chose to Study in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the most diverse cities in the entire world. There is something for everyone in this Special Administrative Region (SAR). Since the British transitioned Hong Kong back to China in 1997, the city has maintained its own currency (HK dollar), immigration policy, and legal system. The major language in Hong Kong is the Chinese dialect of Cantonese, however English is extremely common.

I decided to study abroad in China because of the overall experience. China boasts the third largest economy in the world and integrates international business along with their own thriving economies. Many firms in the United States have jumped on board and are opening new offices in Hong Kong with each passing day. Although I am not fluent in Cantonese, I can communicate through basic English with the native citizens. It is common to see McDonalds and Starbucks in the city and one can feel a very strong Western presence. The city is rich in culture and thrives off of its ever-growing economy. Lan Kwai Fan [LKF/Central] and Tsim Tsa Tsui [TST] are the main business districts. These areas are very populated with people from all different countries here to add value to their business as well as the Hong Kong economy. When walking along the streets in LKF or TST the majority of people are wearing business suits and those who are not are typically tourists on leisure and vacation. Since the British were in control of Hong Kong prior to 1997, high tea is common in restaurants and tea shops can be found most everywhere. With such diversity, wonderful culture, and large business, I could not pass up the opportunity to grow personally and as an active member of the international business community at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
